EMBOLDING OUR MANY ROLES IN OUR LIVES.. PUT US IN THE HIGHER LEVEL AND MEANINGFUL LIVES..

Residing at the Helm
Being Your Own Village

Sometimes we need to be our own village, utilizing all of our skills and learning more.

Simple survival requires us to be in possession of many skills. The pursuit of dreams requires many more.

Most individuals rely on the support of a village, whether peopled by relatives or community members, to effectively address the numerous ways we need assistance.

This can mean anything from asking favors of acquaintances and leaning on loved ones for support to paying a skilled artisan to handle specialized tasks.

However, each human being is born with the capacity to be their own village. We embody many roles throughout our lifetimes, all of which are representative of our capacity for self-sufficiency and self-determination.

In different moments in our lives, we are our own counselor, janitor, caregiver, cook, healer, teacher, and student.

Our willingness to joyfully take on these roles grants us the power to maintain control over the direction our life’s journey takes.

In times past, human beings learned all of the skills needed for survival.

Today, the majority of people specialize in a single discipline, which they hone throughout their lives.

Thus, many of us feel uncomfortable standing at the helm of our own existence.

We question our ability to make decisions concerning our own health, happiness, and welfare, and are left feeling dependent and powerless.

But the authority to take ultimate responsibility for our lives is simply a matter of believing that we have the necessary faith and intelligence to cope with any circumstance the universe chooses to place in our path.

Proving that we can each be our own villages through action enables us to accept that we are strong enough to exist autonomously.

Cooking, cultivating a garden of fruits and vegetables, undertaking minor home repair, or adopting a healthier lifestyle can help you reassert your will.

Being your own village does not mean embracing isolation, for a balanced life is built upon the dual foundations of the inner and the outer villages.

Rather, being your own village is a celebration of your wondrous inner strength and resourcefulness, as well as an acknowledgment of your innate ability to capably steer the course of your life. (VerGarciaBlogs)

THE SUN IS ESSENTIAL TO LIFE.. REMEMBER THE SUN

The Sun Is Always Shining Remember the Sun
By Evelyn T. Du

If darkness has fallen, we know that the sun is still shining at this very moment somewhere not too far away.
There are times when gloom or darkness causes us to momentarily lose sight of the light. Although it is at these times when the thought of the sun can help us. Its warm, glowing rays brighten even our thoughts, and it’s good to remember that despite appearances the sun is shining right now. We may not be able to see it at this very moment, but if clouds block our view, they are only filtering the sun’s light temporarily. If darkness has fallen, we know that the sun is still shining at this very moment somewhere not too far away, and it’s only a matter of time before it will shine on us again.
When we remember that the sun is still shining, we know that things are still in motion in the universe. Even if life feels like it is at a standstill, sometimes all we need to do is have faith and wait for the time when everything is in its perfect place. Or we can we can choose to follow the cues of the sun and continue doing our work and shining our light, even when we can’t yet see results. In doing so we exercise our patience, making sure we are prepared when opportunity knocks and all other elements are in their right and perfect places.

The sun also reminds us that our own shining truth is never extinguished. Our light shines within us at all times, no matter what else occurs around us. Though the sun gives us daily proof of its existence, sometimes our belief in our own light requires more time. If we think back, however, we can find moments when it showed itself and trust that we will see it again. Like the sun, our light is the energy that connects us to the movements of the universe and the cycles of life and is present at all times, whether we feel its glow or not. (VerGarciaBlogs)

Worldwide data gathered proves that by the time diabetes is diagnosed, one fourth of its victims already have complications- mainly in the form of eye and kidney disorder the key to making an impact in such ailments is early detection. The pre-diabetes stage seems to be prevalent as diabetes itself, often described as in between phase where the individual is not yet diabetic yet the blood sugar is not normal.

If early detections is an excellent platform prevention we might as well identify people in the pre-diabetes stage, those that are overweight and obese, those with family history of diabetes mellitus (DM) or women with diabetes during pregnancy, then doctors can possibly intervene at an earlier stage.

Diabetes is a growing epidemic worldwide. In the Philippines, the prevalence of diabetes among Filipino adults has gradually increased over the past ten years up to 7.2 % as of  2008. According to the National Nutrition and Health Survey (NNHES) and the next survey would be projected that the prevalence will increase to around 10.2 %, a ratio of one in ten Filipino adults.

Some ways to address the growing problem of diabetes are as follows:
1. Identify those who are at risk for developing diabetes.
2. Check their blood sugar.
3. Educate them on how to prevent diabetes.
It is estimated that people with pre-diabetes is half of those with identified diabetes.

After identifying people at high risk, testing for their blood sugar levels will help confirm if they have elevated blood sugar levels. For those who are pre-diabetes certain lifestyle intervention have already been proven to prevent diabetes in clinical trials involving thousands of peoples who were followed up for as long as 7 to 20 years. Among lifestyle changes which were even more effective than medications that were used in clinical trials includes: weight reduction of 5 to 7%. a moderate exercise of 30 minutes per day and reduction of daily fat consumption or intake from 25 to 30% of total calories. Investigating the therapeutic claims of dietary supplements in cancer treatment in the Philippines
Studies show a steady increase in cancer incidence around the world. The top sites for women include breast, cervix, uteri, and lung, while top sites for men include lung, liver, colon/rectum, and prostate. It is important to spread cancer awareness and information to keep the numbers from going up. Of the leading causes of cancer in the Philippines – breast, lung, liver, colon-rectal, and cervix – three are preventable (lung, liver, cervix) and the remaining two can be cured if detected early (breast, colon-rectal). Although cancer awareness campaigns happen yearly, it is always vital to continue awareness initiatives as new information is constantly available as research and cancer studies continue.
In addition to awareness, safe and effective cancer care and treatments are also vital information that should be shared. While knowledge of the disease is spreading it is also important to remind patients of how to treat the disease in the safest and most effective way possible.

Proper and correct information dissemination is one of the main goals of the Philippine Society of Medical Oncology (PSMO). PSMO is a scientific, professional organization of 196 practicing Philippine medical oncologists committed to the advancement of the science, ethical, and holistic practice of medical oncology. PSMO participates in national programs, campaigns, and activities and actively promote cancer awareness and safe practices in medical oncology for optimal patient results.

On October 18, 2013, PSMO along with the Philippine College of Physicians (PCP), Philippine Food Drug and Administration (FDA), pharmaceutical company Roche, and Globo Asiatico Enterprises, Inc. held a press conference with the encompassing theme “Dietary Supplements: Investigating the Claims.” There is an increasing number of herbal supplements (both food and medicines) being promoted in the Philippines and patients have little or real knowledge about them other than what they read or see in advertisements. PSMO, PCP, along with FDA, saw the urgency to demystify the allure of these herbal alternatives and give patients facts so they may make educated and informed decisions, along with their doctors, about their treatment.
“With the proliferation of scientifically-unsupported alternative cancer treatments, PSMO has established that there is a need to educate the public on how to address the cancer problem,” PSMO president Dr. Felycette Gay Lapus shared. “This year, the focus of PSMO is on information dissemination through partnerships with pharmaceutical companies, government offices, and the media. PSMO has put together a position paper on the use of dietary supplements in cancer treatment to help guide fellow oncologists, doctors, and patients in making correct choices when it comes to cancer treatment. This is in line with the mission of PSMO to equip the Filipino citizens with the correct information in regards to cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment.”

“We understand that patients may want to try alternative treatments,” Dr. Ellie May Villegas, PSMO vice president, shared. “However, these alternative treatments, instead of main stream therapies, were proven to be unsafe and even expensive. Patients would be better served by looking at complementary medicines that are used as adjuncts to mainstream cancer care. They are supportive measures that control symptoms, enhance well-being, and contribute to overall patient care. Their benefits are usually supported by clinical studies and they are generally inexpensive. Complementary therapies include acupuncture, massage, music, and mind-body therapies such as meditation and dietary supplements which are generally regarded as safe (GRAS).”
At the press conference held in Shangri-la EDSA Plaza Hotel, Drs. Lapus and Villegas shared PSMO’s policy statement on alternative therapies as well as information on food and herbal supplements with no approved therapeutic claims, and the benefits of integrative oncology in cancer treatment. They likewise shared a list of the commonly- used supplements not supported by high-level scientific evidence, those supported by very limited high-level scientific evidence, and those supported by high-level scientific evidence. Additionally, Ms. Joyce Cirunay and Ms. Florita Moreleja from FDA’s International Affairs Office and Health Scams Surveillance Office respectively, joined the press conference to share the latest steps that the FDA have taken to fight against dietary supplements with false claims that have led to harm.“We continue in our quest to arm the public with as much information as possible,” said Dr. Lapus. “Prevention is the ultimate goal, but if it can’t be achieved then it is important to get proper and safe treatment as early as possible. With many dietary supplements and preparations, we felt it was important to discuss the documented facts.”

Several medical and technological advances have been made in cancer research and treatment and as a result more people are surviving cancer. These include innovative cancer medicines backed by clinical trials, targeted and biological therapies, personalized health care, proper and accurate diagnosis, new complementary tests, multidisciplinary treatment, and side-effect management. All of these have resulted in more Filipinos cancer survivors.
The main goal in cancer management and treatment is education and knowing the facts. The more patients are empowered with the facts, the more they can make educated decisions with their doctors on the right course of safe and effective treatment. While dietary supplements and alternative treatments may seem appealing and are fast becoming readily available, patients should be vigilant that they are not being misled by false promises. Proven treatments should take precedence with alternative supplements being just that, “supplements” to mainstream cancer therapies. (VerGarciaBlogs)
