Amazing Breaktrough In Thyroid Operation

In  photo shown are participants and speakers of the 2nd International Symposium on Trans-Oral Endoscopic Thyroidectomy, held recently at the Chinese General Hospital and Medical Center in Manila, Philippines. The objective of the program is to appreciate the concepts in endoscopic thyroid surgery and to understand the operative indications, techniques and variations in endoscopic thyroid surgery.

Covering and attending the 2nd International Symposium on Trans-oral Endoscopic Thyroidectomy Vestibular Approach (TOETVA) of the Department of Surgery - Chinese General Hospital and Medical Center (CGHMC) Thai general and laparoscopic surgeon who is recognized as the pioneer of TOETVA in the ASEAN region, Dr. Angkoon Anuwong, discussed about the subject matter.

An amazing surgical procedure was introduced in the 2nd International Symposium held recently at the Chinese General Hospital and Medical Center (CGHMC) that of  the removal of thyroid gland by oral surgery. Symposium highlights a surgical demonstration of transoral thyroidectomy through vestibular approach and a hands-on basic laparoscopic skills workshop.

The surgical technique of thyroidectomy, as well as adjunct technology, continued to advance. Most recently, various new instruments (ie, harmonic technology) and approaches including video-assisted thyroidectomy and robot-assisted thyroidectomy have emerged.

It is carried out in varying thyroid cases and benign thyroid disease. Survival of  patients that has  received early this kind of treatment is excellent when they recovered from the post operation.. patients quality of life greatly improved avers Dr. Angkoon Anuwong of Thailand. Dr. Anuwong had perform Trans-Oral Endoscopic Thyroidectomy (TOET) for many years and had performed for almost 500 patients and it was a great success he added.

The traditional method of performing the surgery is through collar incision. This provides a substantial exposure of relevant anatomy. Performing the TOET is not without risks. Possible complications may include injury  to nearby structures, bruising and infection.

With the advancements in the medical technology, minimally invasive surgical techniques have been developed and applied. Mostly women got affected by the prevalence of thyroid disease and the benefits of endoscopic thyroidectomy may outweigh the conventional method of treatment because of aesthetic   and natural  outlook and showing no marks or scars in the operation procedures..

In addition.. The minimally invasive technique through the trans-axillary route has some flaws wherein there is inadvertent injury to traversed structures. The procedure in itself has some degree of difficulty and learning procedures. The alternative trans-oral vestibular approach gives endoscopic surgeons the chance to decide which method is best applicable for the patient.

Press conference with leading newspapers editors and health journalists were present to ask questions about Trans-oral Endoscopic Throidectomy procedures. Shown in the panel were Dr. Sammy Cunanan, MD, FPALES, FPCS, Dr. Rey R. Mathay, MD, Dr. Angkoon Anuwong, MD, FRCST, Dr. Samuel Ang, MD, FPCS, Dr. Ruby Go, MD, FPCP, Dr. Herbert Z. Manaois, MD, DPSP and many others.

The technique is under the leadership of Dr. Sammy Cunanan, Section Head of minimally Invasive Surgery of the Chinese General Hospital and Medical Center. This great endeavor is under the direction of Dr. James Dy and with the active support of Dr. Samuel Ang the Chairman of the Department of Surgery of CGHMC.

The 2nd Interna-tional Sympo-sium is in accor-dance to CGHMC's key principle to maintain excel-lence in medical care through continuous updating of knowledge and performing skills. Resource person is Dr. Angkoon Anuwong of Thailand, pioneer of Trans-oral Endoscopic Thyroidectomy in Southeast Asia lectures on the said topic.

In conclusion, over-all symposium topics and discussions was a great success.. I would like to thank Dra. Hilda Ong, head of the media department of the CGHMC for inviting me on this special occasion. (VerGarciaBlogs)
