 Securing Decent and Sustainable Employment A Key To Economic Prosperity

The International Labor Organization (ILO) in its advocacy to promote the Decent Work Agenda stated in its manual, a decent work is integral to efforts to reduce poverty and a key mechanism for equitable, inclusive, and sustainable development. "Decent work involves opportunities that are productive and deliver a fair income, provides security in the workplace and social protection for workers and their families, and gives people the freedom to express their concerns, to organize and to participate in decisions that affect their lives.

With apprehensions. As various national and party-list candidates filed certificates of candidacy for the 2025 mid-term elections key issues of urgent and high importance to workers and to the society must be at the forefront of their agenda to secure the so-called “labor vote”. First and foremost, for the benefit of the labor sector, Decent Work and Sustainable Employment must be included in their agendas for economic prosperity and social development.

AWATU-TUCP National President Temistocles Dejon, Jr. one of the Vice-President of the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) said in a meeting organized by IndustriALL Southeast Asia office that labor and social issues are the most often neglected concerns that candidates do not want to deal with; if it is, it just falls into false promises.

Fulfilling secured employment for all that guarantees decent wages and better working conditions is close to the heart of the workers and their families as it satisfies the needs of everyone including businesses and the economy. A satisfied workforce will lead to an increase in productivity and contribute to a healthy and stable economy as workers have more money to consume in the market.

“It is thus imperative to seek multi-partisan support on the pending bill on workers’ rights to security of tenure filed by the TUCP Party List at the lower house as an enabling right to organize and to collectively bargain for better terms and conditions”, said Dejon.

"From this point onward, we will continue to engage with political aspirants to hear and debate their campaign agenda and find a common vision of economic and social prosperity that will be beneficial to workers, their families, and society." avers Dejon. 

To conclude, the ILO defines decent work as “opportunities for women and men to obtain decent and

productive work, in conditions of freedom, equity, security, and human dignity.” The basic principles of decent work are universal. They apply to men and women everywhere, irrespective of occupation, industry, or setting.
