LOVE MEANS HAVING NOTHING TO SAY YOU'RE SORRY..

Hate and Love

By: Evelyn T. Du

Emotion - what is emotion? As defined, emotion is “a strong feeling, excitement or agitation”. To us, emotions are those things that create sensations in our brains and cause us to feel. They are part of what makes us human.
ate and Love, for example, must be two of the strongest emotions felt by the human mind. Both can cause extreme reactions - good and/or bad. Hate and Love are motivators. Many things have been created or destroyed in the name of hate or love.

H Hate causes once good people to do very bad things. One has only to look at history to see examples of the destruction done because of hate. The most familiar instances of those who have done “bad” things in the name of hate include Hitler and the Ku Klux Klan. Hate goes hand in hand with prejudice and surfaces in a multitude of ways. There is religious hate; look at the wars in Ireland, Bosnia, and the Middle East in the name of religious hatred. Ethnic hatred has caused riots, murder and marked dissension in society. People allow personal hatreds to cloud their vision and create mayhem. If someone hates, they destroy not only that which they hate, but also themselves. One cannot hate without being affected by the backlash and consequences of their actions. Nothing good has come from hate. Love, on the other hand, creates its own rules; it is the good side of hate. In 1 Corinthians 13: 1-8, it states “Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous., it does not brag, and it is not proud. Love is not rude, is not selfish and does not get upset with others. Love does not count up wrongs that have been done. Love is not happy with evil, but is happy with the truth. Love patiently accepts all things. It always trusts, always hopes, and always remains strong. Love never ends.” According to this passage, love is all good. Love knows no bounds and is eternal. When a person is in love, the whole world is wonderful. There is nothing so good for the heart as love, be it parental love, the love of a child or a partner or even the love of a pet. One cannot survive without love; or at the least one cannot feel complete. However, there are several questions to be contemplated: Can there be love without hate, or hate without love? Can we know love without knowing hate? How do we know love is good and hate is bad? Are the two so intertwined that they cannot exist without each other? Is hate just the total absence of love? What makes a person love one person, but not another? Why is love so important to our well being? Because one can love, does that mean they will ultimately hate? If one hates is he capable of love? How
does love start out so wonderfully and end up hurting so completely? Is this where love turns to hate? I recently saw a movie in which a certain line caught my attention. The male character stated, “You hate me don’t you?” The female character’s response to this was, “I don’t love you enough to hate you!” Does this mean that in order feel true hatred, you must feel true love? How can these questions be answered? The answer is that no one may ever truly be able to answer these questions. Hate and Love are too intricately entwined in our minds. In trying to answer these questions, one only comes up with more questions and no answers. In a perfect world, would there be hate? Would there be only love? If this were the case, would the concept of love even matter if hate wasn’t there to show itself? All we get when contemplating these questions are further questions! It is said that hate is evil and love is good; however, has not some evil been done in the name of love? Or is that just love turned to hate? What of those who love and then kill because of the loss of that love? Is that act committed in the name of love or in the name of hate? What of people deprived of love? Is this how one learns to hate, by not learning how to love? Again, in discussing the good and bad, the pros and cons, the what ifs and whys of love and hate, one only raises more questions.

I HATE YOU LOVE ME..
In this world, things will continue to be motivated by hate and love. It is impossible to get away from one or the other of these emotions. Our capacity to love is moderated only by the possibility of being able to hate; just as being able to hate is moderated only by our capacity to feel love. Without these emotions, are we not just empty shells? If we are incapable of feeling these emotions intensely, do we really feel at all? There seems to be no middle ground with either love or hate - you either do or you don’t. There is no mediocrity with either emotion. Hate and Love both can sustain a person and carry them through periods of trial in their life. In our daily lives, we can only hope to see the good of love and not the burden of hate. We must deal with these emotions and work to overcome any harm they may create. However, as easy as this concept seems, will we ever truly be able to manage our feelings of love and hate?
