DESPITE CONCERNS FOR GROWING ACTIVISM PUP OBTAINS P187 MILLION FOR CLASSROOM SHORTAGE

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) announced the start of construction for the new main academic building of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) Main Campus in Sta. Mesa, Manila will help address the 9-story shortage of classrooms and learning facilities.

 In a report to Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan, DPWH National Capital Region Director Nomer Abel P. Canlas said that the soon-to-rise modern story shortage main school building will replace the old structure with six floors that will accommodate PUP’s growing student population. Before the pandemic, it registered the highest number of students enrolled with more than 70,000 and counting. The Polytechnic University of the Philippines is located in Sta. Mesa, Manila, Philippines.

“We are as excited as the students in the reopening of schools and return of in-person classes, and one of the ways we are welcoming back our Iskolar ng Bayan is by providing them a bigger, better learning environment,” Director Canlas added.

 

The ceremonial groundbreaking was graced by DPWH Assistant Secretary Antonio V. Molano, alongside PUP officials and faculty led by University President Manuel M. Muhi and Executive Vice President Alberto C. Guillo.

 

The school building project will be implemented in phases by DPWH NCR. Phase 1 will start with the North Wing, with a funding allocation of P187.3 million, and is estimated to be completed in twelve months.


PUP is known for its student activism.  PUP has many student groups active in political reform. The militant national democratic partisan groups are the cause of frequent rallies on campus. PUP's variety of partisan groups includes liberal, socialist, socdem, and several political organizations.


In addition, more than a hundred of the student population are foreigners from Singapore, Indonesia, Cambodia, and Myanmar (ASEAN Countries) others are the People's Republic of China, and African states are Tanzania, Nigeria, and Ghana. Also, students from South Korea visit PUP every summer to take up courses in the English language.


But, overall, the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) is now the top school most companies preferred to hire, as reported by JobStreet Philippines. As mentioned, results from the report showed, that for jobs in the area of business process outsourcing (BPO) or Call Centers, Polytechnic University of the Philippines was the priority choice.
