TUCP-AWATU BATS FOR GOOD GOVERNANCE AND TRANSPARENCY AND IMMEDIATE APPROVAL OF P200 LEGISLATED WAGE HIKE by Ver M. Garcia News Editor

AWATU President Temestocles Dejon, Jr., stressed a point with the labour group with Mr. Coral at the TUCP Headquarters.

Many concerns have been raised about the labour sector of the land. To the modern heroes of the world who have made significant contributions to the economy, they are truly an inspiration to all. However, despite their hard work, their demands have fallen on deaf ears, causing misery in the Labour Group Sectors. Due to this indifference and inaction, a message of concern has been sent to the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI) and stakeholders from the furious Labour Sectors led by All  Workers Alliance Trade Union- Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (AWATU-TUCP), the biggest confederation of workers' unions across various industries in the Philippines, headed by its AWATU President, Temestocles Dejon, Jr., regarding their demand for a legislated wage increase of P200 across the board, which still remains unresolved at the time of writing.

In a recent news update regarding rampant graft and corruption issues, the dismayed citizens, who are experiencing several calamities such as typhoons and earthquakes in different parts of the country, are understandably distressed. Additionally, the spiralling cost of living and the unabated price increases of all commodities serve as the Sword of Damocles hanging over the heads of Filipino workers. In light of these circumstances, perhaps it could have at least alleviated the burden on Filipino workers if the P200 pesos across-the-board wage increase had been approved earlier than expected. Clearly, due to these natural and man-made disasters, there is a pressing need for labour economic planning and anti-inflationary measures, programmes and policies to protect the Filipino labour sector.

Time is gold, compliance is a must, and the government is called upon to act fast to avoid the quick erosion of the public trust and to pacify the ire of the public. The investigation must be massive, transparent, nationwide and livestreamed to the public to avoid the perception that the investigation is politically rigged.

Those who are involved in the ghost flood control projects around the country, unfinished, and substandard projects, should be brought to the law and prosecuted. There is a long list of persons involved in graft, but jails are not enough to contain or hold them. Since ICI, led by Associate Justice Andres Reyes, tasked to investigate anomalies in flood control projects, it will have to prosecute the guilty, whether they belong to a lower or higher position in the government. Nevertheless, justice must be served according to TUCP-AWATU President Temestocles Dejon Jr., and the welfare of the people is of primordial importance, "Dura-Lex Sed Lex... The law may be harsh, but it is still the law" according to Dejon, Jr.

The TUCP-AWATU desires that the workers' representation in the ICI has apparently been ignored. Transparency and accountability violations are already at work in the consciousness of some people and institutions. The TUCP-AWATU finally instigated the workers' urgent advocacy for a speedy, authoritative, credible and competent inquiry and prosecution of all involved in graft. ''Time, as the saying goes, waits for no man''. Every tactical delay due to a dilemma and technicalities of the law, blank wall inquiry, places risk on the loss of important and necessary evidence, which can possibly be exploited by culprits as an iron-clad evidence. Pinning down the culprits would be too difficult.

The ICI should have an unhampered dialogue with the different stakeholders in a way that does not affect accountability and transparency..There are several findings that reveal that the budget insertions, which happen after the budget allocation and deliberation are done, were pinpointed as an opportunity to hatch graft and corruption. There should be an investigation into these unprogrammed insertions after the budget deliberation and allocation.

Coercion, Influence peddling, conspiracies and intrigues may be dividing the House of Representatives and the Senate and may constitute a possible constitutional crisis. (VerGarciaBlogs)
