TUCP APPEALS TO CONGRESS TO APPROVE A P150 DAILY WAGE HIKE FOR WORKERS

It has been a long time, since 1989 when the last approved wage hike given was a measly amount of P25 and the highest wage increase was only P50, and that is after thirty-five  (35) years without a legislated wage hike. Congress should act now and address workers' plight to reverse these unfair labor practices.

With this impasse, the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) voiced out to the House of Representatives to immediately pass House Bill No. 7871 authored by TUCP President and House Deputy Speaker Raymond Democrito C. Mendoza, which seeks to legislate an across-the-board wage hike of P150 of workers in the private sector.

According to House Deputy Speaker Mendoza, "All must share in the burden and sacrifice. But for far too long, workers and worker families have been the only ones sacrificing. Since we can remember, workers have been the whipping boys and the sacrificial lambs in building our nation. Workers have been the ones building the wealth of the very few!"

In addition, “We laud the marching orders of Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez for the House Committee on Labor and Employment to urgently and vigorously conduct public hearings as soon as possible to hear all sectors and deliberate on the much-needed increase in the take-home pay of our workers,” avers Deputy Speaker Mendoza.

There is a pressing need to increase the minimum wage of workers, particularly those in Visayas and Mindanao who are currently earning P360 a day. The measure guarantees an increase in the daily pay of more than 4 million minimum wage earners. Once this bill is passed and becomes a law, this will provide great relief to our poor and hardworking employees. Despite the opposition of employers rehash arguments.

Furthermore, Deputy Speaker Mendoza added, “As Filipino workers struggle with already-low wages eroded by inflation and various headwinds, the legislated wage hike is no longer a social or economic imperative but a moral and existential imperative, especially for our millions of mostly poor wage earners. Their honest hard work receives only poverty wages that cannot even sustain the health, productivity, and need for a decent life of their families."

The TUCP leaders headed by its Vice-President Tim Dejon, Jr., together with Sonny G. Matula, Arthur Fermo Juego, and House Labor Chair Fidel Nograles discussed the much-awaited wage increase at the House of Representative lounge. They lauded the marching orders of Speaker Martin Romualdez and Deputy Speaker Raymond Democrito Mendoza to vigorously conduct public hearings to hear all sectors and deliberate on the much-needed increase in the take-home pay of our workers.

Workers deserve their just share. This is now a moral and existential struggle that Filipino workers face. It may be a steeper climb, but it is more worthy of us. It may be a higher hurdle, but it is the nobler cause to join hands and unite for a worthy cause! TUCP leaders ended
